  • Front adaptive optics
    Back systems used with telescopes that can compensate for distortions in an image introduced by the atmosphere, thus resulting in sharper images
  • Front aperture
    Back diameter of the primary lens or mirror of a telescope
  • Front charge-coupled device (CCD)
    Back array of high-sensitivity electronic detectors of electromagnetic radiation, used at the focus of a telescope (or camera lens) to record an image or spectrum
  • Front chromatic aberration
    Back distortion that causes an image to appear fuzzy when each wavelength coming into a transparent material focuses at a different spot
  • Front detector
    Back device sensitive to electromagnetic radiation that makes a record of astronomical observations

This deck was modified when it was brought in: Entries were taken from the end-of-chapter glossaries of chapters 5, 6 and gathered into one deck; the chapter structure of the book is not reproduced. HTML formatting was stripped to plain text, and superscripts and subscripts were converted to the corresponding Unicode characters so that a charge or an index is not lost (H⁺, not H+; T₄, not T4). An entry was dropped when its definition is shorter than 30 characters or longer than 400 characters, when it contains an image, a table or a mathematical formula that is not reproduced here, when it refers to a figure, a table or another chapter, when it is dated by wording such as "currently" or "as of", when it is a bare cross-reference to another term, or when a superscript could not be converted faithfully. Duplicates were removed on the term and on the definition alike, both compared after lowercasing, removing parentheses and reducing plurals to singulars; a term or a definition already used by another Memoquiz deck built from OpenStax was dropped as well. Each deck is capped at 150 entries and holds at least 30. The wording of every definition that was kept is unchanged.
