    Back a loose group of young stars whose spectral types, motions, and positions in the sky indicate a common origin
  • Front baryon cycle
    Back the cycling of mass in and out of the interstellar medium, including accretion of gas from intergalactic space, loss of gas back into intergalactic space, and conversion of interstellar gas into stars
  • Front Chandrasekhar limit
    Back the upper limit to the mass of a white dwarf (equals 1.4 times the mass of the Sun)
  • Front cosmic rays
    Back atomic nuclei (mostly protons) and electrons that are observed to strike Earth’s atmosphere with exceedingly high energies.
  • Front degenerate gas
    Back a gas that resists further compression because no two electrons can be in the same place at the same time doing the same thing (Pauli exclusion principle)

This deck was modified when it was brought in: Entries were taken from the end-of-chapter glossaries of chapters 20, 21, 22, 23 and gathered into one deck; the chapter structure of the book is not reproduced. HTML formatting was stripped to plain text, and superscripts and subscripts were converted to the corresponding Unicode characters so that a charge or an index is not lost (H⁺, not H+; T₄, not T4). An entry was dropped when its definition is shorter than 30 characters or longer than 400 characters, when it contains an image, a table or a mathematical formula that is not reproduced here, when it refers to a figure, a table or another chapter, when it is dated by wording such as "currently" or "as of", when it is a bare cross-reference to another term, or when a superscript could not be converted faithfully. Duplicates were removed on the term and on the definition alike, both compared after lowercasing, removing parentheses and reducing plurals to singulars; a term or a definition already used by another Memoquiz deck built from OpenStax was dropped as well. Each deck is capped at 150 entries and holds at least 30. The wording of every definition that was kept is unchanged.
